ADAPTABILITY: Can you bend without breaking?

9th in the series of Etech’s Character Commitments.

There is an old Chinese proverb that says “the wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water molds itself to the pitcher.” I like that; it gives a great word-picture to the meaning of the word Adaptability.  Dictionary.com puts it this way: able to adjust oneself readily to different conditions.  That’s a pretty straight-forward definition, but I think I like the word picture better…. “Like water molding to the pitcher.”  While some might see this as being wishy-washy or lacking conviction, to me the idea of “molding” speaks of flexibility and being teachable.

Earlier today, I wrote an article for a trade journal that touched on this idea.  I was discussing trends that we can expect to see in the Call Center Industry in 2015.  These trends will demand that our call centers change and adapt to the new technology that is on the horizon. In our technology driven industry, adaptability is crucial to our survival and we have learned to adapt very well to the rapid changes that technology brings.

Adapting to a change in the work environment is one thing, most of us have learned how to adjust to new technology, some more quickly than others, but what about other types of changes?  How adaptable are we in other ways?  For example, when things don’t go our way, when our idea at work gets rejected, when the promotion doesn’t work out, when an accident derails our goals or when life just doesn’t go as planned?  This is why the word-picture of “water molding to the pitcher” spoke to me, because often life doesn’t go as planned, but there will always be a lesson in those unexpected detours if we allow ourselves to mold and bend in the direction of that lesson.

You see, being adaptable isn’t really a sign of weakness as much as it is a mark of strength.  Being able to bend and not break, and being able to learn from your circumstances instead of railing against them shows great wisdom.  So as we close out 2014 and prepare for a new year, this is a good time to reflect on your adaptability. Look back on the events of this past year and ask yourself, “Did I adapt to my circumstances or did I resist them?”  If you look back and see more resistance, then I challenge you to resolve to be more adaptable in 2015. Remember, the water molds to the pitcher, but when it’s poured out, it refreshes many.
