Yes! You Are Creative

You may wonder why I’m writing a blog on Creativity. Well, Creativity happens to be one of the 12 Character Commitments of Etech Global Services. Why, you may ask? Because here at Etech, we place a tremendous value on the creative process. Our staff has developed many innovative solutions to enhance our call centers and provide working solutions for our customers. In our world, with constantly evolving technology, creative minds working together has proven to be a means of keeping us nimble and moving forward.

It’s easy to think that creativity is all about music or great works of art, but creativity is SO MUCH MORE than that.  In fact, let’s take a look at how the word Creativity is defined in Dictionary.com

  1. The state or quality of being creative
  2. The ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships or the like and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations etc.  originality, progressiveness or imagination
  3. The process by which one utilizes creative ability

Isn’t it interesting how none of these definitions include painting great works of art or composing beautiful music. Each definition speaks about a process, ideas, a quality.  I found this confirmed what I’ve always believed:  that creativity is in everyone. Everyone has the ability to look at a certain problem and then talk through ideas about how to solve the problem.  The old adage, “think outside the box” is really just another way of saying “use your creativity to come up with solutions.”  In fact, an article that I read recently, talked about how Creativity is actually becoming an academic discipline.  You can check out the full article here, but basically it said that Universities are beginning to place equal importance on the creative process as they have on critical thinking.  Some universities are even starting to offer courses in Creativity….. how about that?  With all the changes and advances in technology over the last twenty years, the marketplace requires bright, innovative thinkers and universities are seeing the need to prepare students for that.

So, how does one get the creative juices flowing?  For me, clearing my head can often be the ticket.  If I think too long and hard about something I can begin to feel a “mental block” but if I get outside, take a walk or some other task, that can often be what helps the process.  Believe it or not, according to an article in Psychology Today, Nolan Bushnell, the founder of the Atari company, got his inspiration for what became a best-selling video game while sitting on a beach flicking sand. According to this same article, daydreaming happens to be a very useful tool in the creative process. Daydreaming helps us relax, and a relaxed mind is a more creative one.  So the next time you see your child daydreaming, don’t tell them to stop…… you never know, their daydreaming may very well be laying the ground work for future greatness!
