Service Is Required. Serving Is a Choice.

Service Is Required Serving Is a Choice

As we wrap up another week together, I want to leave you with a thought that has been on my mind. I believe one of the greatest misunderstandings in leadership is that many people confuse service with serving. While the words sound similar, they are not the same.

Service Is What We Do

Service is expected. It is part of our job. We answer the phone. We solve problems. We respond to emails. We meet deadlines. We execute projects. We fulfill our responsibilities. Every one of those things matters.

Serving Is Who We Choose to Be

Serving goes much deeper. Serving is the mindset behind the action. It is choosing to put another person’s success ahead of your own convenience. It is listening before speaking. It is encouraging someone who needs it. It is taking ownership when something goes wrong.

It is staying late to help a teammate, making time for a customer who simply needs to be heard, or mentoring someone with no expectation of recognition. The work may look the same from the outside, but the heart behind it is completely different.

At Etech, we don’t aspire to simply provide great customer service. We aspire to be servant leaders and trusted advisors who deliver game-changing solutions. We believe every interaction is an opportunity to make a remarkable difference for each other, our customers, and our communities.

The Leaders Who Changed Your Life

Think about the leaders who have had the greatest impact on your life. Chances are you don’t remember them because they were the smartest person in the room or because they held the biggest title. You remember them because they invested in you. They believed in you. They cared about you. They served you. That is the kind of leadership that changes lives.

  • Service is required. Serving is always a choice.
  • The good leaders complete the task. The great leaders elevate the people around them while accomplishing the task.

One Question Worth Asking

As you finish this week and prepare for the next, I challenge each of us — including myself — to ask one simple question: “Today, am I just providing service, or am I truly serving someone?”

I believe that when we choose serving over simply performing a service, our culture becomes stronger, our customers become more loyal, our teammates become more engaged, and our communities become better because we were there. I believe this because I have seen you choose to lead by serving, over and over again, and it works.

Have a wonderful Friday, enjoy your weekend, and as always… keep the faith. Keep showing up. Keep working the plan. And keep serving others. You matter!
